Hail Damage

Hail Damage: What to Do After the Storm

Hail season in Gauteng can leave hundreds of cars needing repair at once. Here's what to do in the first 48 hours, and why timing matters more than most people realise.

4 min read

A serious hailstorm doesn't damage one panel, it hits every horizontal surface on the car at once: roof, bonnet, boot. That volume of damage, multiplied across thousands of vehicles in the same storm, is what makes hail events different from a normal repair.

Document it before you do anything else

Photograph the damage in good light before moving the car if possible, every affected panel, from a few angles. This isn't just for the claim; it protects you if there's ever a dispute about pre-existing versus storm damage.

Report the claim quickly, capacity fills up fast

After a major hailstorm, repair shops in the affected area see a huge spike in demand simultaneously. Reporting your claim and booking your vehicle in early matters more than it does for a normal repair. Shops with dedicated hail-repair capacity will still have a queue, but an earlier booking means an earlier turnaround.

Most hail damage is repairable without repainting

Where the paint surface hasn't cracked or chipped, hail dents are usually addressed with paintless dent removal, the same technique used for door dings, just at volume. It's faster and avoids the vehicle needing a full respray. Where the paint has cracked at the dent site, or the damage is more severe, conventional panel repair and repainting is needed instead.

Don't ignore small dents thinking they don't matter

Even minor hail dents can affect resale value and, in some cases, create small stress points where paint eventually cracks. It's worth having every affected panel assessed as part of the same claim rather than leaving cosmetic dents unrepaired.

Common Questions

Is hail damage covered by standard car insurance?

Comprehensive car insurance policies in South Africa typically cover hail damage as a form of weather-related damage, though it's worth confirming the specifics with your insurer, including any excess that applies.

Can hail damage always be fixed with paintless dent removal?

Not always. PDR works well where the paint surface is intact. If the impact cracked or chipped the paint, or the dent is too severe, conventional panel repair and repainting is needed instead.

How long does a hail repair take?

It depends on the number of panels affected and the repair method: PDR-only repairs are often quicker than repairs needing paintwork. During peak hail season, booking capacity at your chosen repairer is usually the bigger factor in timing.
